Phototherapy FAQs

Should you have any questions regarding phototherapy, please submit them for possible addition to this list.

01

What is phototherapy used for?

Psoriasis

Eczema

Vitiligo

02

How often is it performed?

Three times a week x 21 treatments for Psoriasis and Eczema.

Longer for vitiligo

03

How does phototherapy work?

Phototherapy has a direct effect on the immune cell (the T lymphocyte) which is responsible for the signs and symptoms of the above conditions.

The alteration of the immune signals results in healing of the skin.

04

Where should I have the treatment performed – in my dermatologists office or at home?

If you are able to attend phototherapy sessions at your dermatologists office, this of course is ideal.

However, if you live far away, or if your work schedule does not allow regular attendance, then home care is your best option. Your treatment would still be supervised by your dermatologist.

05

Why does my dermatologist need to be involved?

Phototherapy is a specialised treatment and your dermatologist is trained in its use. Your treatment would need to be monitored periodically exactly as it would be if you had attended the dermatologists office for your treatment.

06

How do I obtain a home care machine?

Discuss your condition with your dermatologist and determine your suitability for phototherapy.

Contact SkinTECH to discuss your options and to determine which machine is best for you.

07

Will my medical aid cover the device?

Many medical aids do cover home care phototherapy.

SkinTECH would be happy to assist you in this regard.

08

Is phototherapy a cure for psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo?

Currently, there is no cure for any of these conditions.  However, one can obtain excellent clearance of the skin – almost as though the condition does not exist.  Maintenance treatment once a week, or even less often, ensures continued control in most individuals.
